The sunnahs of Friday, from Thursday's Maghrib to Friday's Maghrib, each with its source
The 6 sunnahs of Friday
“O believers! When the call to prayer is made on Friday, then proceed diligently to the remembrance of Allah and leave off your business. That is best for you, if only you knew”
“Friday is the best day on which the sun has risen. On it Adam was created, on it he entered Paradise and on it he was taken out of it”
The night of Jumuʿah is Thursday night. It begins at Maghrib on Thursday and the day ends at Maghrib on Friday
Before you leave
Bathe, put on your best clothes, clean your teeth with the siwāk and wear perfume if you have some
The source
“Whoever bathes on Friday, wears his best clothes and perfume if he has some, then comes to the prayer without stepping over people and stays silent while the imam speaks, it atones for the week before”
“The Friday bath, cleaning the teeth with the siwāk and using perfume if it is available”
The earlier, the better
Whoever bathes and goes in the first hour, it is as if he offered a camel. Then the reward steps down hour by hour
The source
“In the first hour a camel, in the second a cow, in the third a horned ram, in the fourth a hen and in the fifth an egg. When the imam comes out, the angels come to listen to the reminder”
During the khuṭbah
Come without pushing between two people, pray what is written for you and stay silent while the imam speaks
The source
“Bathe, purify yourself, come without pushing between two people, pray what is written for you and stay silent while the imam speaks: your sins until the next Friday are forgiven”
Thursday Maghrib to Friday Maghrib
Read the whole surah once during Jumuʿah
The source
مَنْ قَرَأَ سُورَةَ الْكَهْفِ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ أَضَاءَ لَهُ النُّورُ مَا بَيْنَ الْجُمُعَتَيْنِ
“Whoever reads Sūrat al-Kahf on the day of Jumuʿah, a light will shine for him between the two Fridays”
“Whoever reads Sūrat al-Kahf on the night of Jumuʿah, a light will shine for him which extends from him to the Ancient House”
Short on time? Split it: a few pages after Fajr, a few at lunch and the rest before Maghrib
All day long
Send blessings on the Prophet ﷺ again and again throughout Friday
The source
“Friday is among the best of your days, so send abundant blessings upon me on it, for your blessings are shown to me”
After ʿAṣr until Maghrib
Keep your duʿā list ready. Ask for yourself, your family and the whole ummah
The source
“There is an hour on Friday in which a Muslim asks Allah for nothing but He gives it to him. Seek it in the last hour after ʿAṣr”
The supplications and remembrances in this library are drawn from two classical compilations: Ḥiṣn al-Muslim (Fortress of the Muslim), compiled by Shaykh Saʿīd ibn ʿAlī ibn Wahf al-Qaḥṭānī (d. 1440 AH / 2018 CE), and al-Ḥiṣn al-Ḥaṣīn min Kalām Sayyid al-Mursalīn (The Impregnable Fortress), compiled by Imām Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad ibn al-Jazarī (751–833 AH / 1350–1429 CE). Each entry gives its own source.
