زيارة قبر النبي ﷺ
Visiting the grave of the Prophet ﷺ
Your first visit, once you have prayed in his Mosque
Virtues
No one greets me except that Allah returns my soul to me so that I return his greeting
Do not make my grave a place of festival, and send ṣalāh upon me, for your ṣalāh reaches me wherever you are
Ibn ʿUmar, on returning from a journey, would come to the grave and say: peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah; peace be upon you, O Abū Bakr; peace be upon you, my father
In the Seerah
He ﷺ died in the room of ʿĀʾishah in Rabīʿ al-Awwal, 11 AH, and was buried where he died. Abū Bakr and ʿUmar were later buried beside him
Adab
- Make wuḍūʾ, wear clean clothes and a good scent, and enter the Mosque with your right foot and the duʿāʾ of entering
- Pray two rakʿahs first, in the Rawḍah if you have a permit, or anywhere in the Mosque
- Walk calmly in the line that passes in front of the noble room. Facing the grave, greet him: as-salāmu ʿalayka yā Rasūlallāh, wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh
- Move on a step and greet Abū Bakr: as-salāmu ʿalayka yā Abā Bakr. Then one more step for ʿUmar: as-salāmu ʿalayka yā ʿUmar
- Keep your voice low (al-Ḥujurāt 49:2), keep the line moving and follow the guards' directions
- Do not touch or wipe the grille, the walls or the doors
- For your own duʿāʾ, step away, face the qiblah and ask Allah alone
Did you know
- The first dome over the room was raised in 678 AH under the Mamluk Sultan Qalāwūn; it was painted green in the Ottoman era
- Best time
- Soon after you arrive, then whenever you pass. The line is usually shorter late at night and after Fajr
- From the Mosque
- Inside the Mosque
- Getting there
- The line usually enters by Bāb as-Salām and leaves by Bāb al-Baqīʿ
Access in front of the room is usually for men. Women can greet him ﷺ during their Rawḍah session or from anywhere in the Mosque; your ṣalāh reaches him wherever you are. Check the current arrangement on arrival
